Frequently asked questions

Turbo Encabultor is a free parody generator. Type anything and it writes an original, deadpan spec sheet with a parts list and a blueprint, in the tradition of the 1944 turbo encabulator joke. Making and sharing is free; printable extras cost a few site credits called Cogs.

The joke

What is a turbo encabulator?

A fictional machine from a 1944 engineering parody, described in confident jargon that means nothing. It later became a mock data sheet and a series of straight-faced spoof films. Read the history.

Is it "encabulator" or "encabultor"?

The famous original is the turbo encabulator. This site is Turbo Encabultor: we machined one "a" out of the name to save weight. It is our own, entirely original take.

Is any of this real?

No. Every machine, part, unit and specification is invented. Nothing here is a real product, specification, certification or qualification.

Do you copy the original text or the videos?

No. Every word list was written for this site, and a built-in check keeps the original's invented words out of everything we generate. We link to the sources and host none of them.

The generator

How does the generator work?

It is procedural: it picks from our own lists of invented parts, materials and units using a seed. The same subject, style, Turbo level and seed always give the same machine, and the blueprint is drawn from that seed too.

What do "Reroll" and "Keep" do?

Reroll makes a new machine for the same subject. Tick up to three parts you like and they survive the reroll.

Who can see a machine I save?

Anyone with its link. Saved machines stay out of search engines and the Hall of Machines unless a person approves them, and every saved machine has a report link.

Can I use the results in my own work?

Yes. Use the free results in stories, slides, games and team chats. Please do not pass a spec sheet off as documentation for a real product.

Cogs and money

What are Cogs?

Site credits. You spend a few Cogs at a time on printable extras, with one click and no checkout. Cogs have no cash value, cannot be transferred and never expire. Cog packs are not on sale yet. Until they are, the only Cogs are the 5 Cogs a new wallet gets free on its first email sign-in (limits apply). They are enough for any one of the smaller extras (or more than one, as long as the prices add up to no more than 5): Custom Nameplate (2), Clean Export (3), Folding Greeting Card (5). The larger extras cannot be unlocked until packs are on sale.

What can I get with Cogs?

Custom Nameplate (2), Clean Export (3), Folding Greeting Card (5), Spec Sheet PDF (6), Certificate of Encabulation (8), Blueprint Poster (10), The Full Works (16), Chief Engineer's Edition (8, Written with AI). Each is unlocked for one machine and can be downloaded again from your wallet.

How much are Cog packs?

Cog packs go on sale soon; nothing can be bought yet. The planned prices are on the Cogs page and may change before then.

Can I get a refund?

An unspent pack can be refunded in full within 14 days. Spent Cogs are not refundable, but if a file is broken or wrong we fix it or return the Cogs. See Refunds.

How do I sign in?

By email. Enter your address and we send a link that signs you in. There is no password.

Is anything written by AI?

One optional paid item, the Chief Engineer's Edition, is written with AI from your machine's own parts list and is labelled "Written with AI". Everything else is procedural.

Printing

How do I print the poster?

The Blueprint Poster is a vector PDF at 18 by 24 inches or A2. Take the file to any print shop, or print it tiled at home.

Is the Certificate of Encabulation a real certificate?

No. It is a novelty and says so on its face. See Certificate of Encabulation.
